    Chestertons' Guide to Northcote Road

Northcote Road is most famous as Battersea's shopping district, stretching half a mile and within easy reach of Clapham Junction station. This buzzy but residential part of London is a wonderful place to live, famously trendy and eclectic in its offering, as well as providing a welcoming sense of community.

With that pedigree, it's perhaps little surprise that this is an area that's popular with young families as well as professionals, attracted by its connectivity to central London whilst delivering the kind of lifestyle usually reserved for villages further afield.

    Northcote Road History

Having evolved from farmland, as so much of the historic London outskirts have, Northcote Road transformed from the mid-19th-century onwards, as the population exploded, industrialisation took hold, and the Victorian era catapulted it into a bustling hub of retail and residences.

    The name of the game

Northcote Road's name comes courtesy of Stafford Northcote, the first Earl of Iddesleigh, who was a British Conservative politician and cabinet minister. There doesn't appear to be any specific reason why it was named for him, except that he was fairly eminent, serving in various cabinet positions under Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and then later becoming Foreign Secretary.

    Train transformation

The arrival of the railway in 1863 was a significant turning point for Northcote Road. Up until that point the Battersea area was quite isolated and comparatively rural, but then The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway and The London and South Western Railway joined forces to build Clapham Junction. It provided the impetus for development, bringing a building boom for homes and a growth in population.

    Butcher, baker, candlestick maker

A curious part of Northcote Road's charm and bustling high street evolution is that it is renowned for its specialised butchers. Rooted in its market heritage, which is alive and well to this day, many establishments have made their home here for a long time. Hennessy's Family Butcher has been a local institution for more than 75 years, while Dove and Son, which opened in 1889, operated for nearly 130 years until 2017. Today, that artisan heritage remains alive and well - and it's not limited to butchery either.
