Nine Elms is one of London’s most exciting regeneration areas, located on the South Bank of the River Thames between Vauxhall and Battersea. Once an industrial riverside district, it has been transformed into a vibrant residential and business hub, characterised by striking modern architecture, riverside living and world-class amenities.
Home to major landmarks including the new US Embassy and the redeveloped Battersea Power Station, it attracts lots of investment and a growing community of residents, from professionals working in the city to creatives who want to be in an energising part of London, as well as families seeking a contemporary London lifestyle.

Although Nine Elms is now known for its modern skyline, its history reflects London’s wider industrial and infrastructural evolution.
Hamlet to high rise
Like many areas on the South Bank, Nine Elms was once a marshy hamlet. The name, taken from a row of Elm trees, first appears around 1645, when it was home to farmland, windmills, willow beds, and a fort during the Civil War. Gradually, the area attracted more industry, leading to the development of docks, brewing, lime kilns, and potteries.
Industrialisation and evolution
As the area evolved, it became a hub of industry, very much a working part of London, not least when the Southampton and London Railway Company opened its London terminus at Nine Elms in 1838. Next came the gasworks, which eventually became the site of Battersea Power Station.
Regeneration and modern development
Around 2014 the redevelopment of Nine Elms really got underway, centring on the transformation of Battersea Power Station into an impressive retail and residential area, as well as the construction of illustrious projects including the US Embassy, the Sky Gardens, the extension of the Northern Line, and the creation of beautiful new homes and business areas. Now, with much of the area coming into its own, it is fast emerging as one of the most coveted areas to live in London.
