The history of Knightsbridge isn't quite as illustrious as one might think, having evolved from marshland on the banks of the River Westbourne (now underground), it was once the realm of travellers and merchants entering the city. Its evolution into the fashionable address it is today is largely attributed to the age of innovation under the Victorians, but as with so many parts of London, centuries of tradition linger in the names and places within the area.
Named for kings and knights
The area is first recorded as 'Kyngesburig' and 'Kyngesbrigg' in a charter by Edward the Confessor, who was King from 1042 until his death in 1066. The area was relatively unremarkable, but was known for its bridge connecting London and rural Kensington. Tradition has it that knights would cross the bridge on their way to war and on one occasion a feud broke out between two of them, resulting in the demise of both parties. The name was said to be in memory of the fatal argument. Another suggestion, recorded on British History Online, is that the area known for its thieves and highwaymen saw one Sir H. Knyvett, Knight defend himself successfully against thieves and the name is perhaps in honour of him. Wherever it began, the moniker gradually morphed into Knightsbridge, recorded as Cnichtebrugg in 1220 and Knightesbrigge by 1393.
From highwaymen to high society
Until the late 18th century the area remained fairly insalubrious, with the last recorded incident of highway robbery on Knightsbridge in 1799 - something to think about if you travel along the famous road today. In the surrounding area, history records pockets of wealth in close proximity to those of great poverty. For example, the notorious Victorian slum, Devil's Acre, near Westminster Abbey, was described by Charles Dickens as "the most deplorable manifestation of human wretchedness and depravity". However, affluence was arriving at pace, and by the late Victorian era Knightsbridge was transforming, in no small part thanks to the 1851 Great Exhibition and Prince Albert's vision for London.
A retail revolution
The 1800s saw a real change in Knightsbridge, with a retail and architectural boom that has shaped the area to this day. Architect Henry Holland is said to have been the instigator or paved streets for improved walking conditions; 1831 saw the opening of Benjamin Harvey’s linen shop (later evolving to Harvey Nichols); and 1849 brought draper Charles Henry Harrod’s business, evolving over the next 20 years into a world of medicines, perfumes and stationary as well as fruit and vegetables. It's this legacy that continues to shape the area as we know it today.

There are plenty of bus routes that run through Knightsbridge, connecting it with Westminster, Chelsea, South Kensington, Victoria, the West End and the City. The main transport hubs are concentrated around the Knightsbridge Underground Station and Harrods, with key routes including the 9, 14, 52, 74, 137, 452, and C1.
Travelling by boat
Knightsbridge itself is not located on the River Thames, but river bus services, which are a popular way to take the scenic route around London, are easily accessed from nearby Westminster, Embankment and Chelsea Harbour piers using Uber Boat by Thames Clippers.
Air travel
Heathrow Airport can be reached directly via the Piccadilly line from Knightsbridge, or by road taking the A4 and M4. Gatwick Airport is accessible via the Gatwick Express from London Victoria, while London City Airport can be reached via Underground and DLR connections.
